It seems like I just finished my last blog, yet when I took a look just now, it was nearly a year ago!! How time flies! Now it’s time to wish everyone a Happy New Year again and hope you all had a wonderful Christmas.

I will begin with the end of the year and Molly & Robbie’s beautiful 11 puppies born November 25th...7 boys and 4 girls. I couldn’t have asked for a better litter. This is a first for both Robbie and for Molly and they did themselves proud. I apologize. First of all, in order to write, I have to be inspired or nothing creative comes out of my brain. Secondly, I just don’t ever seem to have the time, between working full-time at a job that has nothing to do with dogs, then coming home to my next full-time job with the dogs, and everything in life that seems to interrupt the pleasures in life that I would like to enjoy. On top of it all, the septic system, furnace, stove and dishwasher all went out this year and without any puppies on the horizon, it’s difficult to replace them. Thank you to Matt and Shelley Lyttle, fellow Chesapeake lovers, who gave me a stove that we are working on getting installed, and hooked up to the gas line as my 40 year old now defunct stove was electric...and we will get it working! I have also become an expert at building fires in our wood stove so we haven’t frozen to death yet ;-).

SPRING FLOWERS IN IDAHO How does the saying go

How does the saying go.....April showers bring May flowers! In this instance, it was April flowers bring May showers.....at least in Idaho where they need it! And so, after receiving confirmation app 5:30 p.m. on Saturday from Dave at RotoRooter that my failed septic system would be fixed without me, on the last Sunday morning of May, Scottie, Molly, Robbie and I, along with my freshly cleaned and oiled (only with olive oil) saddle and other gear, headed off for a week at cousin Jan’s So What & Chesany Kennel Ranch in New Plymouth, Idaho, with plans of dog training, ground working my new unbroke horse, riding – yes, on already broke horses -- and just kicking back. We managed all of it despite the rain and thunder storms that rumbled through for the first 4 days, and we had a wonderful time! We were only able to go horseback riding one afternoon though :-(! And the septic system got fixed but not as easily as it sounded. Thank you Marcie for your help as well!

What a Weekend at the Golden Gate Kennel Club Show

The ACC Supported Golden Gate Kennel Club shows

January 26 & 27th welcomed The American Chesapeake Club supported annual benched Golden Gate Kennel Club shows for us. I got my puppy Robbie who is turning out to be everything I had hoped for....he’s growing up into a big beautiful boy who at 6 months of age is now 50 pounds. Catherine is working him in the conformation classes along with Molly and we are all going to the ACC supported Golden Gate Kennel Club shows at the Cow Palace on the 26th and 27th of this month. Robbie, Molly and I had a great trip to Idaho to Jan’s So What Ranch and on to the the ACC Field Trial Specialty in Cascade, Idaho with some sightseeing along the way! Beautiful country! Molly earned her Canine Good Citizen (CGC) title and her AKC Rally Novice (RN) - no, she is not a Canine Registered Nurse :-) - and Robbie finished his puppy class and earned his AKC Puppy Star designation.

We are continuing with ongoing obedience and conformation classes for Robbie and Molly and will see where that goes this year.

After having to spay Annie aka GrCh. Sandy Oak Wish Upon A Star RN CGC, we placed her with Derrick Dodson and his family. They also have Martha, Molly’s litter sister and had Fire, the grandmother until her untimely loss last year. Derrick also maintains my website! Derrick, a huge thank you :-))!

Ch. Sandy Oak’s Oh Henry! should be back in the ring this year as a specials and working towards his Grand Championship. He’s had 2 great seasons hunting for Greg in the meantime. I saw him in October and he is gorgeous! He will make his debut at the Golden Gate Kennel Club shows at the end of this month!

Also at Golden Gate will be another one of our Ben daughters out of Chesany’s SandyOak Dare To Dream (“Dedee”). Della, aka Chesany’s SandyOak Special Delivery is coming with Jan along with her uncle, Dedee’s litter brother, Chesany’s Field Marshall!

And, unfortunately Thanksgiving week found me diagnosed with a nasty case of Shingles that I still have and am trying to learn to live with! If you are over 50 and didn’t get your Shingles vaccination, please do so immediately. I had been planning on going in that week to get the shot and instead was diagnosed with it.

And so to all, best wishes for a very happy new year!

Kathy and the Sandy Oak gang

Updates for October

NEW RALLY NOVICE TITLE: Molly, aka Sandy Oak's Earth Wind & Fire CGC (Ch. Crackshot Ben There Done That*** x Sandy Oak's Ring of Fire) completed her Rally Novice title this weekend at the Sacramento Valley Dog Fanciers show in Dixon, CA. She earned her first leg at the Del Valle Dog Club of Livermore show in Pleasanton on October 21st with a 94 point score, then this Saturday she qualified at the Sacramento Valley Dog Fanciers show with a 92 & 1st place, and on Sunday finished her title with a 95. So Molly now is Sandy Oak’s Earth Wind & Fire RN CGC!

Robbie, aka Chesagrove Starry Knight at SandyOak, made his debut in the conformation ring this last Saturday also at the Sacramento Valley DFA show in the puppy 4-6 month old jamboree and went Best of Breed. I haven’t done a lot of work with him on the conformation end of his training and he just couldn’t hold still in the Group ring, but got repeated good looks by the judge Mr. Larry Sorensen. He also received a lot of nice compliments by other well known dog folks that saw him with me at the show.

Watch for Ch. Sandy Oak’s Oh Henry! in the conformation ring again soon! Greg and Luann came to the Del Valle Dog Club show in Pleasanton a couple of weeks ago and brought Henry along! Wow! Henry has matured into a drop-dead gorgeous Chesapeake!! We will start showing him again for his Grand Championship and see where it goes from there! Thank you Greg and Luann! You are doing a great job with Henry who will also be out hunting with Greg this season.

Nothing more for us for this year.....but to try to get out training and to the weekly conformation classes now with both Robbie and Mollie to get ready for the ACC supported Golden Gate Kennel club shows at the end of January. I am hoping to breed Lacey again on her upcoming heat to Ben and already have a few deposits for pups. These Ben & Lacey kids are some of the nicest I think I’ve ever produced.

So, everyone have a Happy Halloween and be safe!

And on with Robbie

September 24, 2012

The Vincent Journal is now the Robbie Journal. Vincent just didn’t fit this wonderful pup that I’ve now had for a month and Robbie does!! Robbie is the whole package....I have high expectations for this little fellow that he will easily follow in his Grampa Rusty’s paw prints!

I just spent the last week travelling with both Robbie and Mollie. We went up to my cousin, Jan Holshevnikoff’s lovely ranch in New Plymouth, Idaho, and from there Jan with Della (from Dedee and Ben) and I with my two drove up to Cascade, Idaho where we spent 3 wonderful days at The American Chesapeake Club National Field Trial specialty. The entire trip covered over 1,600 miles!

Where do I start. The trip to Jan’s was about 650 miles through some of the most barren Oregon High Desert you can imagine with miles and miles of country ravaged by a recent wild fire that Carol and I clocked through 30 miles of desolation on the way back! We arrived at Jan’s about 7:30 on Sunday night. Monday morning Jan and I and the youngsters left for Cascade. The trip was beautiful as the road followed along the scenic Payette River which is actually also right down at the end of Jan’s road! Jan said she knew a place where we could stop for lunch, and before I realized what was happening I was following Jan down a steep gravel “road” in my new low slung van to the rocky beach along the river. We made it and made it back up and it was worth it as we sat by the river eating our lunch, then took the pups out to the river to swim. It was a good thing I handed Robbie off to Jan on a flex lead or we might have been chasing the pup down the river. He went right in and started to swim! So I ran back and got the camera and his bumper to fetch and got some great pics. The water didn’t phase him. Then we let Molly loose in the river with her Dokken duck. Jan got a great pic of her launching into the river, but all you can see was the splash she made

yes, there really is a dog in the middle of that splash!!

We then continued on up to Cascade which is a lovely Idaho mountain town at approximately 5,500 feet! The Birch Glen Lodge was the host hotel where most of us stayed. It was nothing fancy, but clean and a little rustic. Pups stayed in their crates in our vehicles as there just wasn’t room for their crates in our room. We arrived mid afternoon and spent the time getting acquainted with new arrivals and re-acquainting old friendships. People from all over the United States were arriving with their rigs and Chesapeakes! Here is a link to the ACC website with all the events listed: http://amchessieclub.org/specialties2/FieldTrial12Idaho/schedule.htm

We had a great time! Jan had Della entered in the Junior Puppy Stake which ran on Tuesday afternoon. Prior to that we watched a lot of the open dogs run. The puppies did great and Jan and Della got a Reserve Judges Award of Merit. Pics to follow.....

On Wednesday Jan and I decided to go watch the Derby dogs run. I had really wanted to enter Molly in the Derby stake, but with no one to throw for us in training, I was not able to bring her level of training up to what was necessary to run Derby. But, the judges were great....they had to wait a long time for the last Derby entrant to show up to run the test, so they invited me to run Molly on the short bird of the Derby land double. And, Jane Pappler, the official photographer got these great pics of us.

I also got Robbie out a lot to socialize and hang out. He was a huge hit with just about everyone and couldn’t go anywhere without something in his mouth, so he mostly carried his little bumper around with him. Jane also got this pic of him:

On Thursday, Jan and I decided to go sightseeing and head for home. We went up to Cascade Lake, but it was really too smokey from the fires burning north of us to take pics and all the signs asked people to keep their dogs off the beach. So after souvenir shopping, we headed back to Jan’s via the road along the Payette River and did some sight seeing around Jan’s place where I also took a lot of photos. Then Jan took me to a roping practice at one of the local horse ranches.

I drove up to Idaho alone with just my pups, but the plan was for Carol Knapp, Ben’s mother, and Ben to drive back with me. Carol and Ben went back to Linda Harger’s North Star Kennel in Boise after the trial, and Carol invited us to come over to train the dogs on Linda’s grounds when we picked her up. So on Friday morning we set off to Boise with Robbie, Molly and Della and met up with Carol & Ben, and Dina and her lovely pup Music and went out to Linda’s back 40 to work the dogs. Mine have the least field experience, but did well. We ran some land marks with ducks left over from the trial and stretched both Molly and Robbie out a bit. Then ran Della and Music who’ve had more training. Then we all did some marks on the water. Once Robbie figured out what we wanted, he went right into the water to retrieve his duck....ducks that were almost as big as he was. Then we all loaded up and headed back to Jan’s where Carol and I spent the afternoon repacking the car to make room for another person and a big Chessie in a full-sized crate! Jan also sold her dump truck that day so treated us to a great Mexican dinner at a nice restaurant in Ontario, Oregon! And we sat up and talked much later than we should have for needing to be up at the crack of dawn to head back to California. Thank you Jan, for everything....it was a wonderful trip, and thank you Carol for for your great company and drive sharing on the trip home! It sure made it seem shorter and definitely more pleasant!

On Saturday morning, Jan, who is also an EMT, headed out before us as her unit was on call at the site of a huge annual event in New Plymouth called “The Big Nasty”. You can google it on the web if you don’t already know what it is! And, Carol and I and the three dogs headed for home. Carol brought a book on tape for us to listen to during the 11 hour trip back, and it finished just as we pulled into her driveway. We stopped in Winnemucca for lunch, gas, and to air the dogs, and Molly sniffed out a cottontail bunny and sent it high-tailing out of the bushes. Fortunately I had Molly on her flex lead, so didn’t lose her to the bunny and the wilds of Nevada!

I love the country in Idaho! Haven’t been there before and will defintely be going back. The people are great and the drivers are too. Jan and I are talking about spending the week of Memorial Day next May together so we can visit and do some touring. And Jan is now really motivated to continue Della’s training to go on for her Junior Hunter title and to run Derby at the ACC specialty next year on the east coast! Both dogs traveled beautifully and were a lot of fun to have along. And I nearly got run off the road by 4 very rude drivers within the last hour to home :-()! You gotta hate the California drivers after a trip like this!!

So, we are back to the old grind, had a wonderful trip and I have lots of photos to post!!

I had entered Molly in Novice Rally obedience at 3 shows before I left, and as fate would have it, she came in heat 2 days before the first two shows and we had to scratch! So, I have now just entered her in 3 more shows coming up. Two weeks before Molly came in heat, we went through our paces for her Canine Good Citizen certificate and passed that with flying colors, so Molly does now have her first title!

And, I guess that’s it for now!

Happy training and be safe!

Kathy and the Sandy Oak gang

The Vincent Journal

Not much happening this summer but just got a new puppy from Florida, so starting “The Vincent Journal” and will keep adding to it.....

THE VINCENT JOURNAL....

Monday: Introducing Chesagrove’s Starry Knight at SandyOak, aka Vincent or Vince, born June 17, 2012. And in between it’s warming up nicely!

Catching up from February...

on February 10th we had a lovely litter of 4 girls and 3 boys out of our Dedee, aka Chesany’s SandyOak Dare to Dream, and Ben, aka Ch. Crackshot Ben There Done That***. Jan, my cousin and co-breeder took the pick bitch, a lovely little deadgrass girl now known as Della and who is to be registered as Chesany’s SandyOak Special Delivery. All the pups have great temperament, are very birdy, and have been sold to great homes where some will eventually be hunted. Now thinking of the next breeding which will probably be Lacey again and more than likely to Ben again because that nick is producing some outstanding Chesapeakes.

We attended the Chief Solano Kennel Club shows last month, our first conformation shows since Golden Gate in February, with Lacey and Molly. Molly won her class both days, beautifully handled by co-breeder and professional handler, Catherine Collins, and on Sunday by Catherine’s new assistant Robert who did an outstanding job with her. I showed Lacey and on Saturday she was Reserve Winners Bitch to Sylvia Holderman’s lovely young bitch, Meadowoods Flight of the Phoenix, who is also a Jazz granddaughter. On Sunday, we traded placements and Lacey was Winner’s Bitch with Phoenix going Reserve to her. A huge congratulations to Sylvia and David for Best of Breed both days with Phoenix’s litter sister, Ch. Meadowoods Mountain Echo, a beautiful bitch and expertly presented by Sylvia’s son, David! We will be attending the Coyote Hills Kennel Club shows again with Lacey and Molly on May 19 & 20, then the weekend shows at Woofstock on June 9 and 10, where we hope to see Laura’s good looking young Darby show as well. Darby is a littermate to Molly and somewhat of a Henry look alike. I continue to try to do field work with Molly throwing the birds myself and working her in our one acre field. Molly is steady now, flies out, flies back and delivers to hand. So Annie, Molly, and I along with the last puppy from Dee’s litter went to our first training day last weekend at Alex and Peter Starr’s lovely Blackberry Springs on top of Mission Peak in Fremont. The puppy was sold and her new family picked her up from me there on their way back from a couple of days in San Francisco to home in Placerville. But we got to work the pup on both dead and live pigeons before she left.....another natural who also delivers back to hand! Couldn’t have been more pleased with this pup. Molly and Annie did a great job with their marks.....you could see just how far I could throw for them by how far they ran out before they stopped to hunt, but as soon as each realized they had come up short, they continued to follow the line out until they found their birds. Alex was basically the grand marshall and judge for this event and happened to comment to me that she would love to see what I could do with Molly if I was retired, then later asked me if Molly was forced because of the way she comes in and delivers right to hand with so much enthusiasm. Here are a couple of photos that some one else took of Molly and me at the line:

This was Molly’s first time in the water too! She plunged right into the pond after the bumper then realized she was in something she’d never been in before and flew sidways out of the water to the bank! Thank you Dale Langhorne for putting on your waders and going into the pond with the bumpers to encourage her back into the water - she recovered quickly and brought the bumper back to me every time from then on. Annie also did great with her retrieves in the water. We finished a lovely day with a terrific pot luck dinner and outstanding company up at Alex & Peter’s beautiful old house. We missed those of you who didn’t attend. Maybe next year...... A huge thanks to Alex and Peter for hosting this event every year. And, now I really want to try to get both Molly and Annie out for more work so I can run them for their AKC Junior Hunter titles!

So as we head into summer, it looks like a good start to the year already. Stay in touch, keep those pups working and don’t forget to send in their registration applications to AKC!! And please send keep sending me your photos for the website!!!

Kathy and the gang......

February - Golden Gate and a few losses

HAPPY NEW YEAR! January was a busy month ending with The American Chesapeake Club supported Golden Gate Kennel Show at the Cow Palace. There were 26 chessies entered including 4 of mine and our Papillon that I co-own with my roommate, Marcie. It was the puppy Molly’s debut into the conformation ring and we pretty much threw her to the wolves by taking her to Golden Gate. Of the 26 chessies entered I think mine were the only ones who were not crated on the bench!! Molly did great with the crowds! For the record, Our entries were Lacey, Molly, Annie, and Disco the Papillon along with Henry owned by Greg and Luann Nealon from the first litter of Lacey and Ben. Ben was also there on Saturday and was entered in the Stud dog class shown with his daughter and son, Molly and Henry. Lacey was entered in the Bred-By Exhibitor class and brood bitch class both days; Molly was entered in puppy 6-9 both days and won her class beautifully handled by co-owner and co-breeder, Catherine Collins...who, as I finish this, is probably landing in New York City for the Westminster Dog show with Team Stone! Annie was entered in the Best of Breed competition, but I ended up scratching her as she was out of coat and down on weight and simply not competitive for those shows. We had fun and met lots of people who were all very taken by Molly and Lacey. It was great to see Laura, Darby’s mother, and Beverly and her husband who have Nala. Here are some of the pics I took in our benching area and of Molly and Lacey, the great mother-daughter team and our wonderful diplomats for our breed with the crowds that weekend.

Molly and Lacey

Lacey and Molly

Molly and a very bored Lacey

The Sandy Oak bench section! I purchased Callie as a 2 year old from Chesapeake friends and she’s been an integral part of Sandy Oak ever since.

At the beginning of January, Derrick, our webmaster and new owner of Martha, a Ben/Lacey pup, had to send our wonderful Fire, aka Ch. SandyOak Webfoot Hearts Afire CGC to the rainbow bridge after her health took a bad turn that the vet felt she would not recover from. I thank Derrick, his adorable daughter Kaylee, and his wife Kim for giving Fire a wonderful two years and am so sorry it couldn’t have been longer. Your memory will live on.

And, the weekend of Cow Palace, my beloved Jazz, aka Sandy Oak Touch O’Honey Jazz RN CGC, had a major stroke at 13 ½ years of age and had to be put to sleep. I knew Jazz’s time was coming eventually because of her advanced age, but that morning she seemed perfectly fine when we left for the Cow Palace, so it was all very sudden. Jazz was my constant companion, nurse, guard, mother, friend and a constant reminder of all the wonderful memories of both her grandfather, my Rusty and her grandmother, my Star. Rusty was still with us when Jazz was born and a lot of him rubbed off on her!! It’s never easy to accept the loss of our favorite companions no matter when or how it happens...we will miss Jazz a lot and for a long time to come.

<img class="imageStyle" alt="Jazz @ Ft.
